Elephantine Island sits in the middle of the Nile at Aswan, and is home to some of Egypt’s oldest history — the ancient city of Abu, one of Egypt’s earliest settlements, once marking the country’s southern frontier with Nubia. Today, the island holds the ruins of the Temple of Khnum, an ancient Nilometer used to measure the Nile’s annual flood levels, the small but excellent Aswan Museum, and several traditional Nubian villages, known for their colorfully painted homes.
Kitchener’s Island (the Botanical Garden)
A short felucca sail from Elephantine Island brings you to Kitchener’s Island, home to Aswan’s Botanical Garden. The island takes its name from Lord Kitchener, the British Consul-General of Egypt in the early 20th century, who was granted the island and used it to indulge his passion for exotic plants — importing shrubs, trees, and seeds from as far afield as India and Malaysia.
Today, the garden remains a peaceful, shaded retreat, with winding paths, fragrant plantings, and a lively variety of birdlife — a relaxing contrast to the desert landscape surrounding Aswan.

Both Elephantine Island and Kitchener’s Island are best explored by traditional felucca sailboat, gliding between the two on the calm waters of the Nile — a peaceful, scenic way to spend an afternoon in Aswan.
