Roughly 365 km southwest of Cairo, Bahariya Oasis is the closest of Egypt’s Western Desert oases to the capital — and one of the most striking, thanks to its dramatic mix of black volcanic hills, palm groves, natural hot springs, and remarkable ancient history.
The Valley of the Golden Mummies
Bahariya’s most famous discovery came in 1996, when archaeologists accidentally uncovered a vast Greco-Roman necropolis containing thousands of mummies, many elaborately decorated with gold-leaf funerary masks and cartonnage. Now known as the Valley of the Golden Mummies, it’s one of the largest mummy discoveries ever made in Egypt, with a selection on display at a small museum in Bawiti, the oasis’s main town.
Ancient Tombs of Bahariya’s Governors
Beyond the Golden Mummies, Bahariya holds the beautifully painted tombs of Zed-Amun-ef-ankh and Bannentiu, local governors from the 26th Dynasty (Saite Period) — their colorful wall paintings, depicting daily life and funerary rituals, remain in excellent condition.
Natural Hot Springs
Bahariya is well known for its mineral-rich hot and cold springs, with temperatures ranging from around 30-50°C. Popular springs include Bir al-Ghaba (the most developed, with facilities) and Bir al-Ramla, set among palm groves — a relaxing way to unwind after a day exploring the desert.
Gateway to the Black and White Deserts
Bahariya also serves as the starting point for two of Egypt’s most striking desert landscapes: the Black Desert, covered in volcanic basalt hills, and the White Desert National Park, famous for its surreal, wind-carved chalk formations — both easily combined with a Bahariya visit.
Visiting Bahariya Oasis
Bahariya can be visited as part of a day trip, but its distance from Cairo means most travelers combine it with an overnight stay, often extending into the Black and White Deserts for a fuller desert safari experience.
