Just 100 km southwest of Cairo, Fayoum is Egypt’s largest and most fertile oasis — fed not by underground springs like most oases, but by the Bahr Yussef canal, an ancient offshoot of the Nile. Its lush, green landscape earned it the nickname “Land of Wine and Roses” among the ancient Greeks and Romans, and it’s often called “the garden of Egypt.”
What to See
Lake Qarun, known in antiquity as Lake Moeris, is one of the oldest lakes in the world and a haven for birdwatchers, particularly migratory species in winter.
The Pyramids of Senusret II and Amenemhat III — at Lahun and Hawara respectively — offer a quieter, less-visited alternative to Giza, each showcasing different pyramid-building techniques from Egypt’s Middle Kingdom.
Ancient waterwheels, still turning in parts of Fayoum today, have irrigated the region’s fields for centuries, a living link to techniques used since antiquity.
Fayoum also blends Pharaonic, Christian, and Islamic heritage across its many monuments, along with more recent natural attractions like the waterfalls of Wadi El Rayan and the fossil-rich Wadi El Hitan (Whale Valley), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
