A day trip from Luxor combining two of Egypt’s most distinctive temples — each strikingly different in character, and each worth the journey for its own reasons.
Dendera Temple
Dedicated to Hathor, goddess of love, joy, and music, the Ptolemaic-era Dendera Temple sits a short drive from Luxor and is remarkable for two reasons in particular. It holds striking reliefs of Cleopatra VII and her son Caesarion — the only temple in Egypt to depict this famous queen and her son together. It’s also the only major temple in Egypt where visitors can climb to the roof, offering sweeping views over the surrounding countryside.
Abydos Temple
From Dendera, the drive continues through the Egyptian countryside to Abydos, home to the Temple of Seti I. Its most famous feature is the “Abydos King List” — a carved tablet recording the names of 76 pharaohs recognized by Seti I as his legitimate predecessors, making it one of the most important sources historians have for reconstructing Egypt’s dynastic history.
